BYRDS RICKENBACKER

“In my opinion, the Byrds’ sound would have been impossible without the
invention of the Rickenbacker twelve string electric guitar.”   -- McGuinn

“While George Harrison brought attention to the Rickenbacker twelve string,
James Roger McGuinn put it on the map.”  -- Rickenbacker, Smith, page 84

“As usual, The Byrds played far too loud, but this was seen as evidence of
empowerment or, as one critic called it, ‘loud music dancing on electric cable,
music written in voltage.’”  -- Timeless Flight Revisited [1998], Rogan, page 188

BUSINESS & TECHNOLOGY

Pick an investment: Collectors see electric
returns from playing guitar market

... Weary of playing the Wall Street Blues?  Guitar analyst Gary Dick says his 3,000 global customers who ask him to buy or sell guitars are painting their portfolios black by speculating on the market.

Dick says one of his non-musician clients earlier this year paid $200,000 for a 1957 Gibson Les Paul guitar that originally sold for $265.

Guitars that have been played by superstars or are technically superior have "typically performed at a 10 percent or better return on investment" annually, says Dick, who a decade ago left his job as the national account manager at U.S. phone company Sprint to establish Gary's Classic Guitars in Cincinnati.

In 1999, Sotheby's auction house in London sold the guitar* John Lennon was playing the day he met Paul McCartney for $225,100.  During the same year at Christie's in New York, the guitar Eric Clapton used to compose the rock classic "Layla" sold for $497,500.

Since 1993, Dick has brokered guitars for "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno, the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards and hundreds of doctors, lawyers and bankers he describes as "extremely serious" investors eager to participate in the $500 million-a-year global market for rare musical instruments.

"Ninety percent of my customers are professional investors or businessmen with discretionary income and an eye on the growth potential of specific guitars," Dick says.  "Virtually every guitar I've ever owned is worth more today than when I sold it."

Fred Walecki reckons the Les Paul that Dick said he sold earlier this year for $200,000 is already worth $250,000 and remains a bargain at that price.  He has seen Les Pauls sell for more than $300,000 and says the only two lefty models, now in the hands of Paul McCartney and tennis champion John McEnroe, could appreciate beyond a value of $500,000.

... He should know.  The Walecki family has been buying, selling and appraising instruments since 1936.  They specialize in every type of guitar from vintage Fender Stratocasters to the still-ripening work of master builders such as John Monteleone in New York and the Canadian luthier Linda Manzer.

"Comparing a modern luthier to Stradivari is not outrageous," murmurs Philip Scott, director of the musical-instrument department at the London auction house Bonhams, running his fingertips along the luminous grain of an 18th-century Stradivarius violin.

Scott says the instrument first sold for perhaps 200 gold ducats (about $400) and is now scheduled for auction in November at a minimum opening bid of $1 million.

"Stradivari created the world's first designer label," Scott adds.  "He had a band of loyal and wealthy followers."

Scott says there's no evidence to suggest that pre-1970 connoisseurs of electric and acoustic guitars and the specialist work of young luthiers such as Nieminen will decline in value.

"Over the next 20 to 30 years, I don't see any reason why some of these guitars won't be regarded as seriously as a Stradivari," he explains.  "The client base certainly exists."

Don Bernstine, guitar-acquisition manager for the Hard Rock Cafe, echoes the sentiment that guitars are more than sound investments.

"There's a huge hypnotic attachment associated with investing in a guitar," says Bernstine, guardian of a collection of nearly 2,000 instruments and includes what he describes as priceless guitars played by Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix.

"Guitars are significant items in the lives of musicians and those who listen to their music," Bernstine says of the market.  "Guitars have certainly held better value than any tech stock did."

THE IMMORTALS
The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time

45)  The Byrds  by  Tom Petty

The Byrds are immortal because they flew so high.  For me,
they’re still way, way up there.  They left a huge mark.  First
off, the Byrds were the first credible answer to the British
Invasion.  All of folk rock -- for lack of a better term -- de-
scends directly from the music the Byrds made.  They were
certainly the first to introduce any sort of country element
into rock music.  As if all that wasn’t enough, the Byrds
spurred on a good degree of Bob Dylan’s popularity, too.
And not to be too shallow, but they also were just the best-
dressed band around.  They had those great clothes and
hairdos.  That counted for something even then.  I’ll never
forget hearing...that Rickenbacker twelve-string guitar and
those incredible harmonies.... McGuinn was a banjo player,
and he played the Rickenbacker in this rolling, fingerpicking
style -- no one had really tried it before.  George Harrison
admitted that “If I Needed Someone” was his take on the
Byrds’ “The Bells of Rhymney.”  The Byrds were the only
American group that the Beatles were friendly with and
had a dialogue with.  Those original Byrds really changed
the world in that short time they were together.... The Byrds
represented Los Angeles as much as the Beach Boys, except
that the Byrds were the other side of the coin -- they were
L.A.’s whacked-out beatnik rock group.  They’re part of what
drew me to Los Angeles and made me want to be in a band.

Mars Rocks!  Eclectic Music Moves Rover Mission

The eclectic playlist is Mars rover Spirit mission manager Mark Adler's way of waking exhausted engineers and scientists who are working and sleeping on Mars time and dealing with a sometimes temperamental rover millions of miles away.

Below is the Spirit playlist, along with some explanations by Adler for why the songs were chosen.  A sol is a Martian day, slightly longer than a day on Earth at 24 hours, 37 minutes.

Turn, turn, turn

"There's nothing left to do on the lander for Spirit.  So tomorrow we're going to egress onto the surface of Mars," said Jennifer Trosper, JPL Mission Manager for the Mars Exploration Rover effort.

To several tunes, including Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season) recorded by the Byrds, ground controllers have now positioned the rover "right on the spot" to wheel a short distance, some 10 feet (3 meters) to reach Mars' surface.

Once on Mars, Spirit's science gear is to begin the first set of up-close studies of nearby soil and rock.

Former BYRDS drummer JOHN GUERIN died unexpectedly
on [Monday] January 5th, 2004.  John Guerin, a well-known
session drummer who played on hundreds of albums, re-
placed Gene Parsons as the Byrds drummer in September
1972, and remained with them until February 1973.  A much
in-demand session drummer, he performed with the Byrds
only when his studio schedule permitted, often being re-
placed by other musicians at performances.  His only ap-
pearance on a Byrds record is on the BANJOMAN original
soundtrack LP.  He might also be playing on some of the
bonus tracks on the remastered FARTHER ALONG CD.  He
also appeared with the band on several TV performances.

He played drums for Roger McGuinn, Gram Parsons, Skip
Battin, Herb Pedersen, J.D. Souther, Eric Andersen, Joni

Music industry doesn't know what else to do
as it lashes out at file-sharing

OK, so the music industry is acting with all the clumsy bru-
tality of the British Raj trying to snuff Mohandas Gandhi's civil
disobedience in 1930s India.  But that's hardly the real problem
here.  First of all, nobody ever liked music companies anyway.
Not the fans, who have long complained that recordings cost
too much, whether on vinyl, eight-track tapes, cassettes or
CDs.  Certainly not the artists.  In the 1960s, The Byrds cut

Portland firm sues BBC over music deal

Hundreds of hours of unreleased recordings by legendary
artists such as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix,
hidden for decades in the archives of the British Broadcasting
Corp., will be fought over next year in a Maine courtroom....
...Many of the most significant recording artists of the last 75
years have appeared in a BBC studio to perform.  Many of
those performances have been saved in the company's
archives, and some have been released on CDs in recent
years.  According to the lawsuit, BBC sold its rights to the
music in 1997 to a company called Masterrights for as much
as $4 million in advance royalties for recordings released in
North America....  Live recordings by the Everly Brothers, T

The Byrds have been released, following
previous releases by The Who, The Kinks and Led Zeppelin,
which came out under the Masterrights deal.  Also at
issue are 14 hours of unreleased tapes of the Beatles....

Custom 1966 Rickenbacker 370/12Byrd onstage with The Byrds
L-R: Chris Hillman, McGuinn and Gram Parsons • May 1968

35 years later, 'Sweetheart' a hit

... Generally accepted as ground zero for "country rock," the
album proved to be the first major foray by a rock group into
the realm of country music.... But the album, a perfectly timed
reaction to the psychedelic excesses of the time, has had a
lasting influence on any musicians who like a dose of twang
in their rock.  From 1965-68, the Byrds had produced some of
the greatest work in popular music history.... But the addition
of Southern-born singer/songwriter Gram Parsons signaled
a new phase in the group's development.... In March 1968,
the group performed at the bastion of country music,
Nashville's Grand Ole Opry.... The group was a bit ahead of
its time, however.  Fans were baffled by the band's sudden
about-face -- every self-respecting follower of the late-'60s
counterculture knew that country music belonged to rednecks
and had no business being mixed up in rock.  The album hit
a modest No.77 on the U.S. charts, a much weaker response
than for earlier releases.  Still, "Sweetheart of the Rodeo"
had an impact on such young musicians as the Eagles
and Jackson Browne, who were to become factors in
the country rock surge that would emerge in the '70s....

The Denver Post  • Sunday, September 7, 2003

The Byrds' "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" may not have
been the first shot in the country-rock movement, but the
1968 album definitely crystallized the concept, providing
a blueprint for an entire subgenre to come and introducing
the world to the talents of singer-songwriter Gram Parsons....
By the time Parsons joined the band (replacing David Crosby
on guitar), the trailblazing band was down to just two original
members, Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman.  Parsons' stay
lasted less than a year, but during that time, he helped the
band, which arguably invented folk-rock, acid-rock and
space-rock, kickstart yet another trend: country-rock.
