Buddy Holly’s Leather Covered Gibson

A gem among historic instruments.  This acoustic country Gibson dated
from 1945, so was a prized possession when it came into Buddy Holly’s
hands in the mid 1950s.  Displaying his talent in leatherwork -- it was a
hobby of his -- Holly covered the guitar in tan, gray, white and black leath-
er which he then handtooled with intricate decorative motifs and the leg-
ends “Buddy Holly,” “Love Me,” “Blue Days, Black Nights,” and “Texas.”

Jimi Hendrix’s guitar ... realized £198,000 at auction [circa March] 1990,
while Buddy Holly’s sold for $275,000* at auction two months later [to
Gary Busey, who portrayed the singer in the film The Buddy Holly Story].
